Harmful Algae Blooms– What’s to be done?
Heather will introduce what harmful algae blooms are, what they do to public health, how they affect water treatment, and what can be done about them. This webinar will offer examples of recent HAB’s in BC.
Webinar Objectives:
- How to differentiate cyanobacteria blooms from other types of algae blooms
- What tests to conduct if a cyanobacteria bloom is suspected
- Types of HAB’s that are not caused by cyanobacteria
- How to safeguard a reservoir lake from HABS with watershed upgrades
- What adjustments to water treatment are possible
- How should the public be informed

Heather was the first recipient of a First Class Honors B.Sc. in Environmental Biology from the University of Calgary in 1978, thus her 44 years’ experience in source water quality and reservoir management. Along the way, her team has developed innovations in lake management and in mine reclamation. They specialize in the interactions between water quality and algae, so asking them casual questions about algae in social settings is ill-advised.
