What should Small Water Systems know about CT disinfection?

Disinfection – the destruction of pathogens – is the most important treatment step to ensure safe water quality is achieved. In this webinar, we’ll discuss primary and secondary disinfection, and role of CT, the product of disinfectant concentration and contact time, in ensuring pathogen-free drinking water reaches the tap. We’ll examine how to estimate the contact time between a disinfectant and water in a couple of ways: using residence time distribution curves, and through the use of flow rates, contact basin volumes and baffling factors.

Pranav Chintalapati, Assistant Professor of Teaching, UBC
Pranav Chintalapati is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia. He received his PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder where he investigated maintenance interventions for the sustainability of rural water systems in East Africa. He also holds BASc and MASc degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, where he worked on developing drinking water treatment technologies for small water systems, with a particular focus on rural communities.
